The Secrets Behind The Secret

Back in 2005 I wrote a review of The Secret Movie. Today I found another interesting critique of the "phenomena" of modern marketing, in the guise of spiritual "truths". The essay is called The Secrets Behind "The Secret". Perhaps the most important comment made is the the so-called "secret" (the law of attraction) is hardly a secret...

The real secret is that if a product is marketed well, even if it is recycling old information, it can generate a lot of people in the know. These people do have "the secret" - but it is not the same secret they are selling. I once read a quote somewhere that went along the lines of "the only way to get rich through a self help book is to write one." While I only partially agree with that statement, the sentiment is correct in that many people only read these kind of books (or view these kind of videos) superficially and do not make major and radical changes to their lives. The real magic is in the internal changes that occur through working processes, not through simple "wish fulfillment" (or "the law of attraction").
